All Things Notary

Dan Boisvert

Tom Smith introduced his curling friend and local notary Dan who has been a resident of Delta for most of his life. A graduate of South Delta Secondary in 1991 he entered the business world in technology and financial services before attending Royal Roads and UBC graduating with a B.Comm. and establishing his office in 2008. He eventually served as president of the newly formed BC Notaries Asscociation and was recently elected as a first time member to the Delta School Board. Dan and his wife reside in Ladner with their two young daughters.

Dan  described his work as a notary public as one of providing service in three main areas;
-Home ownership including all matters relating to land, mortgages, transfers, leases, sub-divisions, covenants
-Estate planning including wills, power of attorney and representation agreements
-International documents that can also cover situations such as oaths and affidavits
Although his services were initially affected by the pandemic's lock-down he was declared an essential service and business has grown lately especially with the real estate upswing in the area.

Dan then expanded upon a description of his services by answering the questions from the audience.
Wills---most, but not all, should have one . He uses a triage system; no need, a simple one, one designed by a specialist firm
Guardianship of children-----to be clearly established to prevent having families litigating in the future
Advanced directive----needed to help family members determine a course of action depending on medical situation
Representative agreement---to have a person advocate for you; must be trusted
Power of Attorney ---powerful agreement that you give the right to act on your behalf

Dan concluded his talk with the caution that we should make a solid plan now in order to avoid a court order in the future. Committeeships and public guardianships are time consuming, costly and usually cause a great deal of strife among the survivors. Joan Hansen thanked Dan for his clear presentation and for providing us with direction as we plan our lives into the future.
