ANNOUNCEMENTS
Linda Ding rang the virtual bell followed by the playing of a borrowed version of O Canada

Then a poetic invocation was delivered by Dave Anderson:

"The Rotary Club of Tsawwassen
Meets now on the Internet
We've been missing our morning breakfasts
But we haven't had a complaint yet

Look at all our tiny faces
Lined up on the computer screen
Leslie refuses to mute herself
She thinks she's a movie star queen

Most of us don't know what we're doing
Most of us are out of our league
Its hard to tell who's talking
And we've all got Zoom fatigue

We had to cancel our primary fundraiser
The carts did not roll down the hill
The parade is gone, the Terry Foxers won't run
Lets pray for the end of the chill

There's no more shaking of hands or hugging
The days of meeting in person are gone
Committee meetings are now at a distance
But the work of Rotary lives on

So remember all good-hearted Rotarians
In Tsawwassen we have blessings to share
Our neighbours are both near and distant
Let's work together to show them we care"

PROGRAMME
RESILIENT ROBUST RADICAL
What does Well-Being Look Like These Days?

Kathleen Beaton
Registered Clinical Counsellor

Garry Shearer introduced Kathleen Beaton, a clinical counsellor for seventeen years and a Tsawwassen Rotarian for twelve. Her professional work has led her to help individuals experiencing the effects of anxiety, depression and other life issues. She has advanced training in emotionally focused couples therapy and has run a number of wellness groups. Now mostly retired she takes the time to enjoy all manner of outdoor activities.

Resilience
A full blown lockdown and a racial crisis; the world is suffering. COVID-19 has caused sickness and death for some, economic loss for others and fear and anxiety in most everyone. Resilience is the quality of managing ourselves, the ability to be flexible and bounce back. What is included in resilience?
.optimism - leaning into the challenges
.connection - relying on the help of others
.self-efficacy - trusting your own skills
.spirituality - believing in a higher power that yourself
.institutional - looking to family, work, Rotary
Another way to check your resilience is to examine the way you explain the world. An optimist sees a difficult situation as temporary, specific and caused by external forces whereas a pessimist sees it as a personal failure, long-lasting and a general condition of his or her life.

Robust
Robustness refers to your strength, your health both physical and emotional. Every person has a strength profile. A character strength questionnaire is a tool developed by social scientists to help you understand yourself and provide you with a map to live your life more fully. In spite of everything we still recognize that the negative emotions of sadness, anger, frustration, anxiety are all normal; it means that we are human. By leaning on our strength characteristics we can overcome much of this negativity.

Radical
How to become strong in these times? Research has shown that the development of emotional strength in ourselves comes about when we show kindness to others. This in a sense is radical; rather than hunkering down to think only about ourselves and our immediate concerns much can be gained by thinking of and helping others in a number of ways including;
   .intentional listening
  . expressing gratitude
. accepting benefits provided to you
. sending a note of encouragement
. being compassionate with others and with the planet
. showing patience in everyday activities ie driving
If one looks at the world only through television news we see it as polarized and self-centered. What is radical is to take the reverse view and approach it with kindness. The choice is ours: to move to growth or to retreat to safety.

Greg Muirhead thanked Kathleen for her outstanding presentation. Her message is a good blueprint for developing the skills and attitudes that can help us to lead a satisfactory life in these difficult times. Greg concluded with Kathleen's central message: one can bend or break: the choice is ours.

Sergeant at Arms Report
Sergeant Joan assigned fines to individuals based on how they presented themselves on screen:

For those with distracting screen backgrounds:
Tom Yingling, Blake Cowan, John C, Roger Pryke, Dave Anderson, Wes Klassen

For those who refused to show themselves live on screen:
Marianne Osborne, David Li, Mark Chartrand, Yvonne Anderson and Graeme Peck

The meeting ended with a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson:
"Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail"
