PEOPLES CHOICE AWARD
This special award was created in response to the pandemic and the resulting lock-down. Our club decided to recognize a business that did the most to assist people in this trying time. All businesses in Tsawwassen were considered with the only criteria being that no Rotarian be employed or in any way connected with it. Out of over thirty businesses the top three were put forward and voted on by club members on June 17 at the Zoom celebration. We are pleased to recognize the winner: Mario's Kitchen and its owners Darren and Liz Gates.

Darren and Liz Gates took early action in meeting community and staff safety concerns by closing their dining room in advance of being required to do so. They quickly established a take-out system managing to keep many of their staff employed. In addition, their kitchen supported the essential service workers by providing them with meals and later expanding this service to include seniors and adjusting their menus for them.

Darren spoke of being overwhelmed by the recognition. He sees the Tsawwassen community as being supportive of his restaurant and is pleased that he could continue to keep the service going and his staff engaged.
Congratulations to Liz and Darren of Mario's Kitchen!

PROGRAMME
The Last Hurrah!

Outgoing President Gail

President Gail in her final meeting reflected on our most unusual year. The year's theme of "Rotary Connecting the World" was managed with the help of some 80 Zoom meetings held over 140 hours. In honouring the past, treasuring the present and shaping the future Gail reviewed the goals she established at the beginning of her term:
.Collaboration with others - Interact, Toastmasters
.Retention and Engagement - Zoom events
.Transparency - club assemblies,  "just so ya know" monthly meetings
.Promoting Education - visiting other clubs virtually , learning modules
.Fun and Fellowship - Tap around the Bay, Christmas party, Rotary Rocks

The final two Rotary mugs were handed out to her mentor Tom Smith and to Judy McLeod for the strong leadership shown in the year's successful Foundation year.

Next Gail presented a collage of photos highlighting the year including:
-Fluevog Bonnie Henry shoes and a Rotary tatoo
-Her favourite meetings with the children of Rotary: Tyler Coe and her daughter Keyrsten
-Rememberance Day with the Interact kids
-Project Amigo with Murray and Mike
-Rotary road sign saluting essential workers
-Rotary Rocks project
-Zoomball with family -the time of her life
Rotary Choice Awards.. the last event

And finally, president Gail commented on the  importance of a successful transition.  She passed the virtual gavel (actually one of Mike's hammers) to Laureen who accepted it (actually a meat mallet) Closing with a heartfelt thanks to all for the emails, gifts and cards and now....... now there is time for regular runs and books to read.......
