President Gail indicated that we are probably going to meet this way until the end of the Rotary year with many of our usual activities cancelled including the President's Ball. On the bright side these virtual meetings are an excellent way to invite other people to join in with us- all you have to do is share with them the link that you are provided.
Next week's programme  will feature Heather Edwards as our Guest speaker. Heather, a community and economic development officer, is a director of the Rotary club of Eugene Ore. with an active involvement in Project Amigo.

(A temporary glitch occurred when President Gail became suddenly invisible and voiceless. John C jumped into the breech and calmly took over until Gail magically reappeared)

District Governor Welcome
DG Bala spoke about being in the middle of the annual district AGM that was being held virtually over two days. He reminded all that the district's Rosters Awards are still going ahead May 24 and commended our club for keeping things going during these strange times.

Events Committee    Leslie
Sadly, but not surprisingly, the year's Rotary Parade has been cancelled as have our usual summer movies. But not all is lost as some plans are under way for holding a drive-in movie(s) at Ladner's Patterson Park

Drive-By Diaries
A video taken by John Anderson's daughter of Saturday evening's cavalcade of 22 cars driving past the Anderson home was shown. John indicated that this was most uplifting for his wife Claire. Thank you to all who participated especially Leslie who provided the balloons and Brian Coe who led the parade in his vintage fire truck.

Sunshine Report
Benno Bucher reported on Gerry vanGaalen who has been moved into hospice care in Ladner. While visiting is problematic he is reachable by phone, emails or texts. He indicated his appreciation of what the club has done for him.
Also other news reported by Sara Kirby; an addition to her family expected in the fall

Visual Updates      Mitch Romano
Mitch has been busy updating our website including the banner for the Sunriser. This is not a one-time fix but a process as he plans to continue to improve our on-line presence.
He encouraged members to make use of Facebook which is a good way to get the word out about our projects. The power of social media can have a compounding effect when shared with others. The effectiveness of Facebook can be monitored by the number of "likes" that can be tabulated. If you have something that you would like posted but unable to do so Mitch has kindly offered to do it for you.

Mon Apr 20  10:00 AM Zoom in for Coffee
Thur Apr 23    7:30 AM Regular meeting with presenter Heather Edwards

PROGRAMME
THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND COVID-19

Garry Shearer  Executive Director

Yvonne Anderson introduced current club member and former club president as a transplant from Toronto who moved to Tsawwassen in 1982 to open up a new sales territory for his company. Later he struck out on his own leading the sales and organization of a number of local start-up companies. Along the way and into retirement he became active in volunteerism serving as president  of the Hospice Society, president of the Beach Grove golf course, president of our club and ultimately District Governor. After competing in a close in a close election for Delta council he was recruited to become the executive director of the Delta Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber's mission is to support and advocate at all levels of government for the Delta business community that is made up from small businesses to large industries including the two industrial parks at Tilbury and Annacis Island. Advocacy is most critical at this time as governments struggle to deal with Covid19 and prepare for the recovery of the economy. To that end the Canadian Chamber of Commerce has a line to the Prime Minister's Office as part of the Canadian Business Resilience Network. At the provincial level the chambers are part of the BC Recovery Task force and locally ours is part of the mayor's similar task force. Gary outlined the different gov't approaches to sustain businesses and individuals:

Federally, he outlined some of the major supports including:
. Canada's Emergency Reponse Programme (CERB) providing 75% of wages provided to support workers
. tweaking of the CERB on the fly as the situation develops ie temporary farm workers
. interest free loans to business
. deferral  of HST and GST payments

Provincially, the supports have resulted in:
. the creation and adjustment of an essential services list
. BC Emergency benefits- a $1000 one time tax-free benefit for lost income
. support for rentals with $500 paid directly to landlords
. relief for school taxes paid by businesses

Locally, the chamber as a member of the mayor's task force is in full support of the social distancing measures to maintain safety in its fight against Covid 19 and recognizes the needs of the health maintenance of its citizens by petitioning to open Centennial Beach and Deas Island Park. While safety is paramount the chamber's message emphasizes the need to get people back to work. If business collapses even essential services will be dramatically affected.

Garry concluded his presentation with a lively question- answer session. He was thanked for his clear and well-organized presentation by several members and who left him with the recommendation that "he take his show on the road" -virtually, that is.
