What about the Schools?    Laura Dixon
Laura as vice chair of the School Board, Delta's largest employer with 3000 employees is taking care of the needs of over 16,000 students. Maintaining education in these circumstances is indeed an intimidating task with all types of planning meetings being held virtually while the actual learning taking place at home.
In addition the teachers, who are key to the success, have had to take into account the usual challenges of  inclusion, assisted learning, ESL and mental health . Importantly, they have maintained connection with students some in highly unusual ways by parading through the neighborhoods and chalking math questions on the driveways. The school board has chipped in with the loan of 4000 laptops. Laura concluded by reading parents' notes of appreciation.

2001 District Conference   Blake Cowan
Featuring himself in front of the conference's promotional poster Blake extolled the "opportunity of a lifetime" to be had at the event being held at next year's May long weekend. The website is now open and the early- bird registration rate is in effect until Sunday April 26.

Programme
PROJECT AMIGO

Heather Edwards
Nathaly Guitierrrez

President Gail introduced Heather as our first outside speaker in the new Zoom format. Heather, a graduate of the University of Oregon, has worked in the field of community and economic development in the non-profit area. As well, she is now on the board of directors as PR chairperson of the Metro Rotary club of Eugene OR. After a jaunt in Europe on a Group Study Exchange she was introduced to Project Amigo, fell in love with it and has been actively involved since.

Heather, with the assistance of Murray Lott, described the Amigo Project's mission as one of changing the lives of  kids in an impoverished area of rural Mexico through education. Without education there is no way out of the inevitable cycle of poverty. Rotary has taken an active role in the area's education through a number of initiatives from providing books, uniforms and tuition fees to creating  community programmes including volunteering work weeks. The students must keep up their grades, attend a weekly homework club and provide community service include the mentoring of younger students.  As the young people move up the costs also go up with the university students requiring support also for housing and meals.

Project Amigo's programme that supports education is totally dependent on donations by individuals or groups. Heather provided the statistics showing over 1000 students completing secondary school and 77 graduating from university. At this point in her presentation she introduced Nathalay, one of these university graduates.

Nathalay Guitierrez
Nathalay, now 24 years old, is one of the university graduates who is now living and working independently. She described her story as one who came from a loving but poor family who could not have afforded to keep her in school without the external help. She described her first trip out of the country to Canada being supported by the Rotary club of High River AB and is now employed in a legal firm where she has worked in the town of Colima for the past three years.

In the question-answer period both Nathalay and Heather indicated that the current situation in Mexico is a difficult one; classes are not in session and everybody is staying home just as we are here. The difference is that there is really no computer or internet support to come to the assistance of the students. In spite of this, plans are continuing for the hopeful re-opening of the schools and the re-start of the programme.

Murray thanked our speakers in Spanish and Liz Ellis, our club's international chairperson, translated this into English. She expressed our appreciation and that we are indeed honoured to have both join us live from far away Oregon and Mexico.
