Matt Blair
Publisher Delta Optimist

Tom Smith introduced Matt the publisher of the Optimist since his appointment a year ago replacing our own retiring Dave Hamilton. Coming from a newspaper family he has spent his entire career in lower mainland publications. A winner of numerous newspaper awards, Matt is impressed with the way the area's  citizens engage with its local paper.

Matt began by recognizing the history of the Optimist that has been serving the area for 99 years and now distributes 17,000 papers mostly to detached homes. It continues to grow in readership planning to add another 700 this January mainly to serve new, younger readers many living in condos. He spoke about Covid-19 and its effect on the newspaper business . With the lock-down quite naturally advertising and flyer revenues took a blow. The community came forward to help by taking part in the volunteers' subscriber programme and in this dire situation community leaders also provided support. The Chamber of Commerce, politicians, and local businesses all in their own way supported the newspaper to keep things going and minimize its staff rollbacks.

News arrives to us in various ways. As well as newspapers we have radio/television as well as all manner of social media to inform us. Television with small research departments are primarily interested in abbreviated stories delivered in a timely fashion. Social media simply rehashes anything it can find; true or false. Newspapers are more concerned with back-checking and getting information disseminated correctly. Being ultimately liable they must get it correct, take the time to make things as factual as possible and endeavour to explore all sides of the story.

Although many local newspapers are turning exclusively to the digital format Matt sees the strength of the Optimist in the combination of both print and digital. He is committed and dedicated to maintaining its print capacity which he sees as the heart of the enterprise. The digital platform can be used in certain specialized advertising situations and to expand its reach beyond the local area such as North Delta. At the end of the day audience growth is the key to its continuation. Matt closed by thanking the community for its support and our club for its initiative in promoting businesses in the area.

Dave Hamilton thanked his successor Matt for providing his insight into the future and for his willingness to work with the community. Under his leadership the local newspaper  continues its stellar work as exemplified by its work with our club in producing a  2-page ad featuring the local business community. The Optimist will continue to serve the community as long as the community desires it.
