Programme
Being a Global Citizen

Sameer Esmail
John Anderson introduced Sameer Esmail a second year UBC student majoring in international studies. Sameer was selected for the Rotary Adventures in Citizenship programme and served on a mission to Ecuador while still in secondary school. Presently he is a student ambassador at university and has his sights set on a career in foreign affairs.

Sameer's presentation is adapted from the one he made at the district conference where he posed the questions:What is citizenship? How does it differ from global citizenship? and Why is it important? Citizenship he described as having an understanding of and acting upon the rights and responsibilities of belonging to your country. Global citizenship is thinking on a bigger scale. It is imperative to engage with others throughout the world. Sameer presented examples of his global citizenship experiences.

Adventures in Citizenship sponsored by his local Rotary club where he learned about Canada through:
. visits to the Holocaust and War museums
. watching the House of Commons in action
. meeting with the academic community
. exchanging views with the Japanese ambassador
  . attending a citizenship ceremony

Model United Nations Representative
Here, Sameer, as a representative, was able to simulate the experience of dealing withe real world issues. In 2019 he chaired the committee on terrorism where he dealt with stereotyping and confronting it with honest dialogue. He came away from this experience inspired and hopeful.

Travel to foreign countries : Ecuador and Malaysia
In Ecuador he participated in working on projects alongside  the local inhabitants in two separate areas of the country. Along the way he learned of the sustainable farming practices along the Amazon river. In a trip to Malaysia as part of the Global Vision group he learned about the value of connections in both the business and diplomatic world.

Sameer concluded with the view that being a good global citizen means more than having an understanding of the different parts of the world. It demands action in your involvement whether in an academic, energizing, individual or organizing capacity. As to the future he sees much in the way of challenges but also much in the way of potential achievement through collective as well as individual action. Blake Cowan thanked Sameer for his thoughtful and enthusiastic presentation. As a young global citizen he is living the talk and taking action to make the world a better place.
