George Harvie
Mayor of Delta

Garry Shearer Past District Governor and executive director of the Delta Chamber of Commerce introduced Delta's mayor who was first elected in 2018.  George Harvie brings with him over 30 years experience in municipal governance in a number of positions mainly in Delta and in the city of Burnaby. For his contributions in civic leadership he has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal. While working he kept up with his education resulting in a BA from SFU, a diploma in Environmental Health from BCIT and studies in Advanced Management from Dalhousie.

During the spring of 2020 it became obvious with the onset of Covid that this would not be an ordinary year. The City took the initiative early on by closing most of its facilities which unfortunately also caused staff layoffs. By working with local businesses a number of initiatives such as a modified food programme were created. On the financial front spending was deferred and property tax deadlines were extended. Mayor Harvie emphasized that he is proud of the way council kept things running in this most challenging year while the people came together in this time of crisis.

Looking ahead the Mayor described the present workings of the Fraser Valley testing station and the plans for the vaccination centers to come. This year's initiatives include major work on Arthur Drive, numerous cross walks, sports courts, the Doug Husband Discovery Centre, and a running track refurbishment in North Delta. The Housing Task force is bringing people of diverse views together on a major Scott Road project. Always on the agenda is transportation from transit options to the new crossing whether a bridge or a tunnel. He spoke of the Delta Youth council and the task force for diversity and inclusion to make recommendations to city planners. The mayor is justifiably proud of the fact that the city is debt free. A strong tax base thanks to two major industrial parks has kept the area's financial status viable. He closed his wide-ranging presentation by recognizing that through the past year's adversity the people of Delta have come out stronger.

The  Mayor then entertained an extended question-answer period after his main address. This touched on a number of topics; bike paths, the Rec Center, park usage, environmental issues, sidewalks, zero emission buildings, running tracks,  food security, beach clean up and our Story Book project. Yvonne Anderson thanked Mayor Harvie for his leadership especially in this past, difficult year and for he and his council's support of businesses that make the community strong and a great place in which to live.
