Programme
THIRD WORLD EYE CARE SOCIETY

Dr. Marina Roma-March

Doctor Roma-March was born in the Phillipines but while a child moved to East Vancouver. She was educated on the West Coast, graduated in the  field of optometry  and established her own practice. On a visit to the country of her birth she was struck by the lack of opportunities experienced there and by the lack of eye care offered to the inhabitants. She and her husband returned to create TWECS, a non-profit organization dedicated to help meet the eye care needs of people in third world countries.

While still at university Dr. Roma-March was encouraged by her grandmother to re-visit the country of her birth. Trudging along dirt roads and packing 200 pairs of eyeglasses she made her way to the village outside of Manila. From this first experience TWECS was created to support the poorest of the poor in more than 18 countries with over 100,000 eyeglasses. With a series of shared photos Dr Marina presented the society in action:
.the waiting line up to their clinics often in the thousands
.the eye assessment procedures in primitive conditions
.the use of deeper ophthalmoscopy exams
.the sophisticated equipment in use; the autorefractor
.attending to the needs of those with physical disabilities
.the organization of the eye glasses dispensing stations
.the joy evidenced by the improvement of sight
.the operation of the collections warehouse in Burnaby

The TWECS mission is to collect old eyeglasses and distribute them to those most in need under the supervision of trained personnel. A team of eye care specialists and volunteers take a two week period in a developing country to meet with the inhabitants, assess their needs and provide them with eye care. These eye doctors, opticians and lay volunteers pay their own way, fly with carry-on only as their checked luggage is comprised of eye glasses and other equipment. During the project they usually help to restore the vision of 4000- 5000 people.

The improved vision of the poor people has an immediate impact on the lives of both them and the volunteers. Whether it is a parent seeing his child for the first time or a young boy finally being able to make out shapes and drawings the event is a moving one. The restoration of vision makes a difference in people's lives; their smiling faces is the reward for the volunteers. Tom Smith then thanked Dr Marina for her presentation as well as her dedication and in doing so presented her (virtually) with the 2700 pairs of eyeglasses collected for the 2020 conference and assuring her that our goal of 5000 would soon be reached.

Special Presentation
Chairperson Judy McLeod described the origin of the Paul Harris which is a recognition of Rotarians who contribute or have contributions made in their name to the Rotary Foundation. As well, Rotarians have a tradition of supporting the Foundation by honouring others.
This morning Judy was pleased to present the latest Paul Harris award to Joop vanEssen who joined us for the meeting. Joop is being recognized for his tireless work with the South Delta Food Bank where he continues to served as the team leader of the volunteering crew. For his thirty years of volunteering Joop is a most worthy recipient of the spirit of the Paul Harris.
