Announcemnts

The meeting's version of O Canada provided by Joan Hansen featured interesting views of the country including one from a satellite. Joan later managed to download a wonderful tribute to Dave Hamilton made on the floor of the legislature by South Delta MLA, Ian Paton.

Peter Edwards delivered a timely invocation that made an appeal to peace. Where there is hatred let there be love;  where there is turmoil, calm; where there is dark, light; where voices are shouting, relief; where hope is needed, the voice of reason.

Programme 2
A Shared Path Forward

Lorelei Higgins
Peace Facilitator

John Anderson introduced Lorelei, a Metis Canadian Cultural mediator who is currently employed by the city of Calgary as an Indigenous Relations strategist. She is well versed in Rotary having been on a Rotary Youth Exchange, been a Rotary Peace fellow in South Africa and has been a speaker at numerous conferences. Her work in bringing an understanding of the Truth and Reconciliation commission is complemented by her taking the title of Mrs Globe Canada in 2021. With an MBA from Royal Roads she navigates a busy life as a wife and mother to two small children.

Lorelei's presentation dealt with the indigenous realities and the "hard conversations" that are taking place among Canadians with the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation commission. Truth can be arrived at in different ways. . For some, storytelling is a way to speak the truth while others look to objective data. With the discovery of the 215 graves in Kamloops the pain and anguish became real for everyone. In another piece of evidence she described the percentage of children dying in residential schools was the same percentage as the fatalities of the Canadian armed forces in WWII. She closed her introduction with a recent photo of kids playin soccer on the grounds of the Kamloops residential school symbolizing the importance of moving on in spite of the rememberance.

Lorelei then enumerated a number of actions we can take:
.becoming familiar with the TRC and its findings
.urging our leaders to follow up on its action calls
.reading books and articles on the topic
.participating in Indigenous community events
.building relationships with First Nation communities
.continuing with Peacebuilding activities
.promoting Peace Fellowship programmes
.volunteering direct time and resources
The process is one of understanding as we move along the shared path. The continued conversation will be a difficult one as we contemplate issues such as the future role of Canada Day celebrations, whether any good was achieved in residential schools and how much is all of this going to cost?

Lorelei ended the presentation with a message of hope by emphasizing that much can be accomplished if respect and kindness overlay all the discussion. Tom Smith thanked Lorelei for her well-organized presentation that was delivered in such a passionate and engaging manner. He then extended her an invitation to attend our Peace Pole ceremony on Sept 21.

Sergeant at Arms .

Joke of the Week:
A man was seated at a restaurant and spied a beautiful woman at a nearby table. She sneezed and her glass eye flew unto the floor and he gallantly retrieved it and returned it to her. He then joined her for the meal and carried on afterwards that lasted well into the evening and then into her apartment. At breakfast he asked if she did this often. "Only with those who catch my eye"
