PROGRAMME
NEW MEMBERS TALK

Tom Yingling

Tom began his talk by explaining the origin of his name which is often mistakenly taken for Chinese. Instead it comes from German roots and is actually the name of the best selling  craft beer that was introduced to the US by a German immigrant. Tom was adopted as a baby by a young couple willing to take a chance on a red haired boy to join their two daughters into the family. He grew up in Kerrisdale before the family moved to Tsawwassen  where he attended SDSS . Before graduating in 1986 he started his first job at MacDonald's at the princely sum of $3 per hour. There he met his future wife although she lived in Ladner. After they married, his wife's younger sister joined the family before the arrival of his three boys.

He has coached his three boys in hockey and lacrosse in spite of having never played these these sports himself . He described the highlight of his coaching career when he and his sons introduced Canadian hockey to some of the disadvantaged children in, of all places, Jamaica. Partnering with various donors that included Canadian Tire and Air Canada they filled 12 hockey bags with everything from pencils to toothpaste to distribute to kids in schools and orphanages and created their version of "Hockey Night in Jamaica". He feels his own children got more out of the life lessons than did their recipients. He has continued his relationship with the area, the latest providing an industrial sewing machine to hold out hope for the Jamaican girls. His second major charitable focus area is the Children's Miracle Network which raises awareness and funding in providing the best and often life-saving support for children.

Tom has worked in the resource industry for a number of years before transitioning into the real estate field where he makes use his local experience to service clients. He became interested in Rotary when he saw the work being done in our Diefenbaker Park projects. Now that his coaching career is ending he now has the time to devote tot he community and feels that Rotary would be a great fit for him. Upon being questioned he was forced to admit to his favourite hobby, the cultivation of tropical plants and palm trees: a little bit of Jamaica brought to Tsawwassen. Acting president Graham thanked Tom for his enthusiastic talk  and for the club's high expectations of him. Welcome aboard Tom!
