The Tekera fund raiser gala was a highly successful affair in netting an impressive $42,000 for the evening. Our club's contribution of $7500 towards this total was most appreciated. This signifies the conclusion of our twelve year association in supporting this amazing project that is now self-sustaining. Special kudos to Sonya and Bridget Sangster for their tireless work on the venture.

Programme
StoryWalk Project

Andrea Lemire

Laura Dixon introduced Andrea, the Child and Youth Committee (CYC) chairperson who co-ordinates agencies that provide support to young people and their families. One of these agencies, the Community Literacy society, falls under these. When Ailsa Howard proposed this project Andrea embraced the idea as did the Delta School board. From there it was forwarded to our club to become involved as well.

Andrea described StoryWalk as an outdoor reading experience whereby a children's book is deconstructed and it's pages laminated before being placed in an outdoor reading position. As participants walk along the path they will be directed to the next pages in the story. The requirements of the project include:
 . an appropriate park setting
. an existing 1 km path
. at least 20 podiums placed at a child's height
. the selection of books for 2-6 year-olds
. a plan for maintenance of the podiums

To bring the project to life required the co-operation of three groups:
-The CYC to co-ordinate among the participants involved; the Delta school district and Parks and Rec
-The city of Delta to determine where it is to be installed and to approve the project design
-Rotary to be charged with designing the sturdy, waterproof podiums

Andrea outlined the budget needed to cover the copies of the book and its lamination, podium materials for 20 stations, and the special introductory printing on the first podium. The total arrives at $800 per walk with a $250 yearly maintenance cost. Ailsa Howard of the Community Literacy society spoke about selecting books that would be engaging and reflect, in some form, life in Delta. Also the possibility of sharing the books with other programmes is being explored. Guest Rotarian, Penny Offer indicated that her Ladner Rotary club is also considering its involvement in the same project in her area.

Judy McLeod thanked Andrea for the enjoyable presentation that introduces a project that "ticks off all the boxes" at minimal cost; development of literacy, fostering of family experiences, creating exercise and providing the opportunity for outdoor fun.

Sergeant at Arms
Sergeant Benno managed to levy fines on:
-Dave Anderson for attempting to cover up by offering a bribe: a double fine 2 x $2
-Ian Bourhill for not muting his microphone while coughing on it $5
-Greg Muirhead for having his cat participate in the meeting $2

He then closed with the Limerick:
"Today we are honored with four district Governors
Dave Anderson tried to impress with cleverness
Andrea Lemire gave us a talk
On how we could read and walk
However, fines are about money not fairness"
