PROGRAMME
                   POLIO
As viewed through a different lens

Gaby Gastonyi
District 5040 Polio Chair

John Anderson introduced award winning professional photographer and author Gaby Gasztonyi who is our  End Polio Now/Polio Plus district chairperson. A polio survivor himself Gaby has led groups of Rotarians to rehabilitation centers in Africa,  mainly in Ethiopia.

Gaby's told his story with the use of his professionally-produced exceptional black and white photos. In spite of the world's success in the eradication of polio going from 350,000 cases in 1988 to a handful left in Afghanistan and Pakistan the disease is still out there; polio is a most resilient virus any many of its victims are still suffering its effects

Gaby spoke about his personal journey where in 1960 he was a victim of polio himself undergoing foot corrective foot surgery at Vancouver's Children's hospital . Fast-forward to over 50 years later found him meeting with kids in Ethiopia who were experiencing the same procedure. Polio affects everyone differently but in every case it is a traumatic event. The children he met in the rehabilitation ward were happy when together but unfortunately often shunned in their villages. They are challenged as much psychologically as physically when undergoing corrective surgery or the necessary laborious stretching exercises.

Sharing the photos of his trip to Ethiopia in 2015 Gaby described the beauty of the country and some of his memorable experiences where a tree was planted in his honour and where he stayed in the same room that housed Mother Teresa. Through the Rotary Global grant he led a project to educate the women on how to manage their children's disabilities. He ended his presentation with a self photo of  his administering the precious drops into a child's mouth.
Foundation chair Linda Ding thanked Gaby for his informative presentation, the sharing of his photos and for his inspirational work in helping people meet the challenges bought on by polio.

Benno Bucher for not responding to his text messages

Dave Anderson for excessive social distancing not wanting to leave his garage
