New Members Inducted

Wayne Connorton presided over the induction of two new members:
Jen Kormendy and Yvonne Anderson

Yvonne is currently married to member Dave and should be revealing some family secrets at her new member's talk.
Her mentor will be Graeme Peck

Jen is a returning member who is working now at the Kinsmen Community Centre. She will be speaking to us soon about her active involvement with Shelter Box Programme.

PETS (President Elect Training Session) President Elect Laureen
Laureen described with enthusiasm her experience at the recent training sessions. She found them to be inspirational and made her proud to be a Rotarian. While there she picked up ideas from other clubs and was able to share what we do that others found valuable.

Programme
Down Mexico Way

Project Amigo

   President Gail

   Husband Mike

   Murray Lott

The three amigos shared their amazing week in the area of Colima Mexico where they worked and interacted  primarily with children in the environs. After the English summary of the the project was posted on screen, Murray impressionably  translated it into Spanish for us (how accurate he was we'll never know). Then, through photos and commentary they provided a diary of their activities over their eight days.
Some of the highlights:
. the area is extremely poor
. their houses are basic, often dark and dank with a dirt floor
. however the area is safe and their places are clean
. the way out of this cycle of poverty is education
. a homework club is important to provide kids with an area to study
. keeping kids in school as long as possible is the best way of support

As well as distributing some school supplies they left the club's donation of $2000 to the project. Murray and his wife Jane  had already been involved by generously supporting an individual child from elementary to secondary school and to, where she is now, at university. In summary, the three amigos found the programme well-organized and look forward to returning, hopefully with a larger contingent.
