Programme
OUR NEWEST MEMBER

Jody Brennan

Jody was introduced by her sponsor Wayne Connorton who described how she joined the club. Rather than being recruited she sought us out in  order to meet new people after moving into the area  and finding ways to volunteer.  In welcoming her Wayne spoke about her rich life experiences as an asset to the community and to our club.

Jody hails from Sudbury, also home of the Big Nickel and Stompin' Tom Connnors. Growing up in the house built by her great grandfather she took inspiration from her dad as a role model and from the sayings of Dr Seuss "Why fit in when you were born to stand out". In her first part-time job at Kresge's she was influenced by a group of strong, independent women who served as her mentors. After a sojourn of extended living in Italy she joined Canada's military.

Her military life began as a cadet with stints at Royal Roads and College Militaire Royal when women were being introduced into the forces. After obtaining multiple degrees she worked in different capacities such as as intelligence officer and logistics co-ordinator. Retiring as a Lt. Colonel she has travelled in far-flung spots  including Germany, Yugoslavia, Bosnia, Iceland  and Croatia.  After her military life Jody entered the public service working in the varied fields of mediation, land procurement, interpersonal co-ordination and systems design. Currently she serves as an immigration appeal judge assessing claims as people are entering Canada.

Jody described some of her interests and activities outside of her career much of which include her family. With her kids taking up football she too became involved in managing community football at  various levels. Her interest in restorative justice has led her to teaching mediation classes. Many of her hobbies are tied to the photography of street art to pictures of local bugs and snails that she forwards to her mother back east. She is looking forward to furthering her interest in travel when it will be safe to do so. Her travel is made easier with her fluency in multiple languages.

Jody finished off her well organized presentation of her life so far by answering a number of questions. She concluded with a tip of the hat to her high school counsellor who administered her aptitude test in 1986. After answering the requisite questions the test revealed her aptitude in the fields of law, social sciences, public service and the military. This is pretty well the way her life has played out. Laura Dixon, her mentor who thanked Jody, looks forward to seeing some of her skills and interests being put to use in furthering the cause of  Rotary. Welcome aboard Jody!!
