Programme
Rotary's Unexpected Opportunities
What Happens When You Say Yes

             Dean Rohrs
Trustee of the Rotary Foundation and Past IR Vice President

Tom Smith introduced Dean, a Rotarian originally from South Africa and now a member of the Langley Rotary Club via West Vancouver. A retired nurse she has been most involved in Rotary at all levels. She has chaired innumerable committees, served as club president and district governor. Then she went on to the international level as a director, culminating on her being named the International Vice President in 2017-18.  Currently, Dean is a trustee of the International Rotary Foundation.

Dean warmed to her topic of the personal benefits of "saying yes"  by relating stories of her life delivered in a conversational style. When, as an international director, she was asked to serve as vice president she did not hesitate but recognized that doing so would be life-changing. Her task; to support president Ian Riseley and follow his directives. The first of these was to represent Rotary at the state funeral of Sam Owri in Kampala. There she delivered the eulogy and spoke to the Ugandan parliament. In all of her subsequent activities she was well supported and recognized the respect that Rotary is held in world-wide. Through this position she also had a good deal of fun such as flying to Brazil for a water conference where she was treated as a celebrity and housed in the presidential suite.

More recently, Dean was asked and accepted the position of director of the International Foundation in spite of having no financial background. She saw this challenge as another incredible opportunity and honour to be asked to contribute to a different part of Rotary.  Learning how the organization stewards its funds is fundamental to the good work we do in the world.

Dean concluded by "Saying Yes" provides the opportunity to grow and enriches one's life. Volunteer experiences change both the recipients and the providers. Judy McLeod thanked Dean for sharing her stories and being the poster girl for the adage that "busy people get things done" . Her final task for the morning;  presenting a Paul Harris+3 and member of the Society (annual donation of of $1000)  to Blake Cowan.
