"What can you expect when you put men, mud and a boat together?" reports the Delta Optimist in coverage of our Rotary work party at Centennial Beach Park.

Ducks scattered one Saturday morning last month as local business owners, managers and professionals launched a boat in the pond at Centennial Beach Park.

It was a Rotary work party cleaning the pond behind the concession building of trash, brush and weeds, but good humour made the activity seem more like fun than hard work.

"Whenever we get together there are lots of laughs," said Rotary Club of Tsawwassen vice president Gerry Beltgens. "Grey skies and the mud don't get in the way."

"What can you expect when you put men, mud and a boat together?" laughed Rotarian Gail McEwan while getting the essentials ready for the barbecue lunch that followed the work.

"It's great that Rotary is doing this," said neighbouring resident Richard Stewart as he joined in to help the 18 Rotarians.

Local residents proposed the cleanup and found both Rotary and park staff receptive.

"We appreciate the Rotary help," said Kevin Shantz of the GVRD.

He directed the cutting of brush and provided the boat and trash bin while Rotarians contributed the work party.

Enough debris was collected to fill two bins.

More then 70 local business owners, managers and professionals form the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen. They are dedicated to community involvement and projects throughout the world.

Locally, playgrounds, walkways, bus shelters, park projects, youth programs, seniors facilities and numerous social support groups have been the beneficiaries.

International work includes polio vaccinations, cleft palette restorations, fresh water wells, literacy programs, disaster relief support, medical supplies and culture exchange programs for youth and young professionals.

Business and professional leaders interested in community service are invited to join.
